Organizing the Unimaginable: How the mejo App Helped Our Family Navigate CHD Care

Our precious daughter Sophie is our youngest of five children and was born with an extremely rare genetic condition caused by a mutation in the GATA6 gene. GATA6 syndrome can cause heart defects, hypothyroidism, and GI issues. Prior to knowing about Sophie’s genetic condition, our Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist diagnosed her with a rare and complex congenital heart defect (CHD) called Truncus Arteriosus.

Sophie came home in August 2023 for the first time after 86 days in the hospital. Her four older siblings were louder than the beeps and alarms of the ICU, making for a smooth transition. She had a feeding tube, twice-daily respiratory treatments due to residual lung disease, a total of 23 syringes of medication given per day, and many regular follow-up appointments with her specialists. She was on a detailed, months-long schedule to slowly wean off of heavy pain medications with methadone and clonidine, where we had to carefully track any symptoms of withdrawal.

Every time I visited a specialist, therapist, or her pediatrician in my sleep-deprived haze, I was bombarded with the same questions that I felt I had answered many times before, or that should have been highlighted as the most basic information in her chart.

Thankfully I now have mejo! I wish I had found this app the moment we first came home with Sophie.

Turning advocacy into power for patients and families.

Advocacy is a word we hear often in healthcare. But for many families, advocacy isn’t a choice, it’s survival.

For me, it started the day my son Reynolds was born.

From the delivery room to the NICU to countless appointments and hospital stays, advocacy has been woven into every step of our journey.

Advocacy Begins in the NICU

When Reynolds was born, he spent 103 days in the NICU. Every decision felt life or death. Every conversation with doctors carried weight. Every late-night update from a nurse mattered more than I could ever have imagined. That was my introduction to advocacy, learning to speak up, ask questions, and push for what my son needed even when I didn’t have all the answers myself.

It was a crash course in navigating a complicated healthcare system. I learned quickly that being an advocate meant being present, being persistent, and being willing to say, “This isn’t good enough. My child deserves better.”

And when we finally brought him home, the advocacy didn’t end. It grew with every appointment, every therapy, every new medication. It deepened with each hospital admission and in the everyday moments of just trying to be a dad to a child with a rare disease.

Fighting for 313 Fewer Needle Pokes

One moment that stands out was the fight for a new growth hormone treatment. Reynolds had been receiving daily injections, and a weekly option became available. The insurance company asked why we needed a new treatment since he already had one.
My answer was simple: because I was fighting for 313 fewer needle pokes a year.

“As my body attempted to right itself, I realized I had to fight for my own medical attention and my own life. I remember having to beg my parents to take me to the ER or to a doctor when I was horribly ill, on the floor, too sick and stiff to push myself up. It took 22 years until the UCLA Neuromuscular Clinic diagnosed a severe variation of stiff-person syndrome (SPS) with the progression of my disease. The neurologist believed I had a form of self-correcting cerebral palsy at birth and it evolved into a type of vehement SPS.

My husband and I fought furiously for access to that clinic and to afford to stay in southern California until I obtained a diagnosis with a rare neuromuscular disease specialist at long last. With my husband’s rare love and help, I could keep fighting for myself, especially after an exceptional marriage of 27 years this July.”

For Madhura, life changed forever when her daughter, Tanmayee, was diagnosed with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS). A severe form of epilepsy. I moved to NW Arkansas for a job, I stayed to build something that matters!

Today is Rare Disease Day.

For families like ours, rare disease isn’t just a single day on the calendar—it’s every day. It’s the middle-of-the-night symptom tracking, the endless medical forms, the explaining (again) to a new provider, the fighting for services that shouldn’t require a fight. It’s being the expert when no one else is.

We didn’t set out to build a health tech company. We set out to be a dads. But when our sons were impacted by rare diseases, we saw firsthand how broken the system is for families. The mental load. The fragmented care. The overwhelming feeling that if we didn’t keep track of everything, no one would.

That’s why we built mejo—not just as a tool, but as a way to reclaim time, energy, and a sense of control for families navigating rare disease. Because we don’t get to put this down at the end of the day. And we shouldn’t have to do it alone.
